We Used To Be Cool

I swear. We did.

But Jamie and I have fallen, painlessly and apparently without a fight, into that vortex of “parental uncoolness” that we swore would never happen to us.

We used to travel exotic countries, were “THE” couple for hosting regular kickass parties, went out most weekends to restaurants & bars, slept in late whenever we got a chance. Don’t believe me? Check out this pic of us 5 years ago.

Ridin’ a hog (ok, scooter), helmet-less, throwing caution to the wind in Thailand. I’m not even wearing a bra, for god’s sake.

Now contrast the above with a conversation we had a few nights ago:

{Scene: We’re watching the “Cars” movie with Mason for, honestly, the 87th time since Christmas. That damned kid wants to watch “Cars” any.chance.he.gets, and I frankly want to kick Santa in the sack (and not the toy-carrying one) every time we’re forced to watch it}

{On-screen, Mack is driving with Lightning McQueen to California. Four street-racing cars zoom up on the highway behind him}

Me: (not being sarcastic) Alright! Best part of the movie!

Jamie: I know.

Me: I really like this rap song. Its wicked. I wonder who sings it?

Jamie: I don’t know, I tried looking it up online but couldn’t find it.

{End Scene}

I don’t know whats sadder, the fact that I was actually groovin’ to a tune from the “Cars” movie soundtrack, or the fact that my husband had already looked it up online to download.

Actually, I’ll tell you what’s sadder.

That night, after the kids were in bed, we made a concerted effort to look the song up, I did an impromptu rap once we found the words, and we then spent over an hour going through triva quizzes about the movie.

Seriously.

And Jamie has only allowed me to write this story if I make sure to mention how he aced pretty much every question we went through, right down to what Flo’s license plate says.

Again. We used to be cool. And now we are parents.

Oh, and for what its worth … the song is called “Rollin’ in the Rearview” by Headbone, featuring Jabu. Because I know we’re not the only parents who wondered.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

  1. Hilarious!

    My kid's too scared to watch movies, so I've never wondered about the song, but I think it's hilarious that you did an impromptu rap to it!

    We used to be cool too, only not quite as cool as you guys. Alex crashed our scooter in Thailand before we made it out of the driveway.

  3. I never thought I would talk about poop as much as I do now that I'm a parent. It's like our go-to topic when we don't know what else to talk about. The definition of romance, I tell you. ROMANCE.

  4. I think crashing your scooter in Thailand still ranks as pretty awesome, especially compared to poop conversations :P . FWIW, I think poop is an amazing source of material for discussions .... it can be part of a funny story, a scary story, a "take heed ye inexperienced parents" story .... the list goes on and on.

  6. How our kids enrich our lives, and take us to places we never though we would go! Better than travel and crazy parties, right?;)

    P.S. don't think I have ever read your blog before! Thanks for starting this, I will definitely be back!
